OverActive Media, the parent group of Splyce and Overwatch League team Toronto Defiant, has its first global ambassador. Abel Tesfaye, better known as R&B singer The Weeknd, has joined the group as an investor and is now a part of the ownership group. He’s also now the first global ambassador for both Splyce and the Toronto Defiant.

“We are thrilled to be welcoming a global superstar like Abel to our investor family,” Chris Overholt, the CEO and president of OverActive Media, said. “Abel’s standing in the music industry will provide our Toronto Defiant and Splyce brands the opportunity to reach more fans and engage new audiences.”

The Weeknd is a Grammy-award winning artist and is also Toronto native, which gives him an even better connection to the Toronto Defiant fanbase. Fans of both the Defiant and The Weeknd can expect some “unique joint efforts” between the team and the artist during the 2019 Overwatch League season.

This is not the first time that a popular Toronto artist has invested in esports. Fellow Torontonian and superstar Drake invested in 100 Thieves in October 2018.

“As a big esports fan, I am really excited to be involved in this project,” The Weeknd said, “I am looking forward to collaborating with OverActive Media in unique and innovative ways.”

Fans will surely be excited to see what kind of initiatives the Toronto Defiant will have with the superstar musician in the coming months.
