Alongside an update that added a new Ana skin, Bastet, to Overwatch, Blizzard snuck in a few changes to the Temple of Anubis menu screen that could be hints for the world’s future. Nothing is ever just a map tweak in Overwatch; last year, a small, changed map detail lead into a new Overwatch hero and animated short.

And that’s why we can’t let this super small detail go. On the shelves of Temple of Anubis, an Overwatch fan DocterfficDoc on Reddit found that Blizzard’s removed the Echo bust and added a mysterious head sculpture. These changes haven’t been made to the actual map, but only the Temple of Anubis background for the current menu screen.

Echo is a potential Overwatch hero and a mysterious robot that was released from the Route 66 payload with the Ashe animated short. We know she’s important to the Overwatch world, but we don’t yet know why. The removal of what many believe is a bust of her likeness could be a hint toward the future. But who’s the mysterious floating head? Overwatch fans on Reddit determined that the head is almost exactly the same a guy in old concept art.

Interestingly enough, neither the heads nor the missing bust are visible in the actual main menu screen. They become visible when perspectives change while looking at Overwatch’s highlight intros.

It’s far too early to really deduce what these changes could mean for the world of Overwatch. But the recently released short story, Bastet, has definitely implied that Overwatch’s lore will eventually move forward, instead of constantly looking toward the past. These changes, too, could be a finger pointing toward the future.
