Paris Eternal’s Overwatch Contenders team, Eternal Academy, has announced that they are parting ways with their roster. Eternal Academy has struggled since their introduction into Overwatch Contenders Europe earlier this year and their parent organization seems to be restructuring the academy slot.
Eternal Academy entered Contenders Europe during season one of 2019, which began in early March. With a 2-5 season one record, they placed at the bottom of their Contenders region and were relegated to Contenders Trials along with Young and Beautiful.
In every region of Overwatch Contenders, teams that perform under a certain threshold are relegated to Contenders Trials, the qualifiers for Contenders. Teams in this tier of competition can battle it out for open spots in their main Contenders region. Often, this includes teams that have worked their way up from Open Division.
This isn’t the first time an Overwatch League academy team has been sent to Trials, though. London Spitfire’s team, British Hurricane, was briefly sent to Contenders Trials last year; they regained their Contenders spot and came in second during season one of 2019.
Eternal Academy was unable to make it to the top of Contenders Trials to regain their Contenders team slot, so their roster was let go. After thanking their players and coaches, the organization told fans in a statement to stay tuned for more news “regarding Eternal Academy in the future.”
This makes Eternal Academy the third Overwatch League academy team to drop out of Contenders. Mayhem Academy, owned by the Florida Mayhem, stepped down from Contenders North America to “retool” the roster earlier today. San Francisco Shock’s team, NRG Esports, also dropped out of their slot this month.
