Tokyo Game Show will stage eight esports tournaments this year

Japan’s biggest video game expo is diving head first into esports.

Tokyo Game Show is bringing a brand new esports series will be taking place at its annual convention on Sept. 23 to 24 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba called “e-Sports X.”

TGS is no stranger to hosting esports events, having held five small competitions in the past. This event, however, will be the company’s first large-scale dive into the esports scene by offering two stages with a maximum capacity of 500 viewers at the event, dedicated solely for the e-Sports X series. The stages will be sponsored by Sony and Samsung.

Eight esports tournaments will be taking place over the two day event. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Street Fighter V, Monster Hunter Double Cross, and Counter-Strike Online 2 are the first four games to be confirmed, with four more yet to be announced.

The list includes two games that are primarily for an Asian audience. Counter-Strike Online 2 is a free-to-play MMOFPS licensed by Valve to Nexon Corporation targeted towards Asia’s gaming market.

The other game, Monster Hunter Double Cross, is a game recently released for the Nintendo Switch that tasks players with taking down huge monsters. Top players will take part in a exhibition match.

Each of the eight tournaments will be invitationals, which TGS claim will include “some of the best teams around the world” taking part. These participants, as well as the prizepools for the tournaments, have yet to be announced.
