G2 show the EU LCS how the funnel strategy is done with a convincing win over Splyce

The Summer Split continues to be entertaining.

After what felt like an eternity of in-game pauses from both squads, G2 Esports continued their winning ways with a victory over Splyce on Saturday.

Over the past few splits, G2 have dominated Splyce, winning most of the matches when the two sides go up against each other. Most recently, they beat Splyce in the 2018 Spring Split semifinals, so everything seemed to be in G2’s favor going into this game.

G2 fielded a team based off one of the only non-crit marksmen left in the meta (Kai’Sa) alongside a Heimerdinger and support-jungle Braum to go against Splyce with an ADC Ziggs and support Fiddlesticks. G2 played around their mid lane Kai’Sa strengths by funneling gold into her in the early game. Splyce failed to counter this, instead choosing to roam and pick up objectives such as the Infernal Drake and first tower.

Even though G2 didn’t have that many supports to protect the Kai’Sa like Fnatic did in their previous matches, it didn’t matter since G2 used their powerful ranged composition to full effect.

In the opening 20 minutes, G2 and Splyce were close in gold. Splyce’s better damage potential (when they had a good setup) kept them within striking distance of overcoming G2.

G2 then repeated the same tactic used by Fnatic in the previous game against Schalke—they waited for Kai’Sa to reach level 16 before sneaking a Baron from under Splyce’s nose. This allowed G2 to take command of the game for the first time in 23 minutes.

This loss drops Splyce to 2-6 against G2 in 2018 competitive matches. Splyce, coming off a loss against Vitality yesterday, are still trying to find their first victory of the season as they look to close out a Worlds spot at the end of the year.

Splyce will take on the undefeated Misfits lineup on June 22, while G2 will face Schalke on the same day.
