With iconic cards like Ice Lance and Flamewaker moving out of Standard, Mage stands to lose pretty much all of the existing decks that you can play with right now. However, with the new Mage legendary quest, there are some insane possibilities that the class can have and the amount of crazy combos you can pull off using the quest is quite staggering. Today we’ll take a look at an OTK Mage decklist we brewed up with the Freeze Mage core combined with some of the new cards.
The deck focuses on playing a bunch of spells and then following up with 2 copies of Arcane Giant and Time Warp on the same turn allowing you to get an extra turn. In the following turn, all you need to do is play Alexstrasza on your opponent’s face and you instantly win. Since we have enough spells to discount the cost of Arcane Giant all the way to 0, playing the first part of the combo on turn 8 or later means that you will also have sufficient mana to deal with Taunts that your opponent might play.
Arcanologist: We run Arcanologist over Loot Hoarder in this deck since both of them essentially serve the same purpose but Arcanologist specifically pulls out secrets. You have access to 2 copies of Ice Barrier and 1 Ice Block and drawing them early on can ensure your health pool is protected and you have enough time to draw all of the combo pieces.
Primordial Glyph: It is very reminiscent of Unstable Portal with a smaller discount, it is definitely one of the cards you want to run in the deck since it can allow you to play powerful spells at a discount on key turns and swing the game in your favor. You can also possibly get more spells that generate Mage spells like Cabalist’s Tome and Primordial Glyph for even more value.
Open the Waygate: The cornerstone of the deck, you definitely want to keep the quest card in your mulligan and play it turn one. With enough cheap spells and card draw you should be able to get the quest done in time and also discount Arcane Giants in time to finish off the game ideally on turn 9.
The cards that draw spells outside your deck include Cabalist’s Tome, Babbling Book and Primordial Glyph. In total you get access to at least 10 spells from outside your deck and you need to play any 6 of them to get the quest done.
