Knights of the Frozen Throne: Top 3 Decks to Watch Out For – Paladin/Warlock/Druid

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

With the new expansion out, there have been a plethora of decks floating around and there are some really solid contenders that might break into the higher tiers of the meta. Today we’ll take a look at some of the decks streamers and professional players who have found success with. Let’s get started!

Control Paladin – Trump

Control Paladin has been a viable deck in Un’goro and with each set, they seem to be getting more powerful tools to work with. Sunkeeper Tarim, Spikieridged Steed and Stonehill Defender pushed the deck into viability last expansion and with Knights of the Frozen Throne bringing in powerhouses like Corpsetaker and Uther of the Ebon Blade, the deck has a nice mix of early game minions and the Paladin Death Knight can pretty much grind out against any control deck.

While the Paladin Death Knight does have an alternate win condition, the card is worth 9 mana even without the win condition considered. The lifesteal weapon is quite powerful and upgrading your hero power to summons 2/2s can be really devastating in the endgame and if your opponent is unable to deal with your board, he will end up losing once you assemble the 4 horsemen.

You have access to the strongest board clear in the game in form of Wild Pyromancer and Equality, as well as several taunts and board control tools that can help you stall until you reach the lategame. Stonehill Defender is stronger than ever with The Lich King being added to the pool of cards you can pull off from its Discover effect along with additional copies of legendaries like Tirion, Wickerflame and Tarim.

Control Warlock – J4CKIECHAN

If you’ve been playing ladder lately, it is more than likely that you have faced the deck more than once. It has a lot of thought put in when it comes to construction. From including cards like Tainted Zetalot that few would have thought about including to creating synergies with Happy Ghoul in the deck. The deck is incredibly fun to play and Defile is definitely one of the most amazing cards released this expansion.

Tainted Zetalot helps you chain some crazy combos off with Defile and it works with all of your spells to get additional value out of them. The deck has a massive amount of removals and board clears. It works particularly well against decks that try to flood the board.

The Lich King is definitely a card to watch out for this expansion and it does some serious work in the deck. You are pretty much guaranteed a win if you opponent does not have an answer to The Lich King. And finally, you have access to the Warlock Death Knight, bloodreaver-guldan – which has a tremendously powerful Battlecry and hero power. It is the perfect lategame card and the hero power can help you control the board while also recuperating your health pool. I have found massive success with the deck and it has the potential to be a top meta deck with some fine tuning. In Wild there are many more demons to work with and malganis and voidcaller are cards that you want to include if you want to try out the deck in Wild. Warlock just might be back in the meta thanks to a bunch of AoE spells and removals the class received after the class has been on hiatus in the Standard meta for months now.

Midrange Druid – Kolento (Rank 1 Legend)

Kolento and Feno have found great success with their respective Midrange Druid lists. While Feno’s list utilizes Arcane Giant and Swipe, Kolento’s list focuses more on generating tokens through cards like Violet Teacher and Living Mana to maintain board presence at all times. Ultimate Infestation was a highly hyped card before launch and it definitely lives up to the hype with the insane value it provides to players. With a healthy amount of ramp tools thrown in.

Malfurion The Pestilent has been one of the low-key powerhouses in this unstable meta despite people having their reservations about the viability of the card. While the hero power does not even hold a candle to the Warlock Death Knight card, it is still good in a vacuum as you can go beyond 30 HP through Armor gain. The deck is incredibly powerful against Pirate Warrior and is definitely a deck you should be looking out for. It has insane value generation with combos like Spreading Plague + Strongshell Scavenger and Violet Teacher token combos to repeatedly swing the board in your favor.

One of the weaknesses of the deck is a lack of swipe and you have to rely on maintaining board presence at all times to take out enemy minions. Your only form of removal is Wrath. I tried out Savage Roar in the deck but it didn’t seem necessary as there is often in excess of 10-12 damage on board to kill your opponent in a couple turns and there are other permanent board buffs like Mark of the Lotus and Power of The Wild to close out games.
