The Until Dawn franchise is experiencing a resurgence in popularity thanks to an upcoming remake and a film adaptation in the works. And that remake finally has its release date.
Today, Neil McEwan, creative director of remake developer Ballistic Moon, made a post on PlayStation Blog that detailed not only an Oct. 4 release date for the game, but nearly all of the changes and enhancements that will come with the new version. As with many other remakes, the visuals have received a big overhaul thanks to enhanced lighting and character models. These changes were shown off in a new comparison trailer, detailing how Unreal Engine 5 has given the horror game a fresh coat of paint. In addition to new visuals, the remake will also feature new camera controls and cinematography that will change how players view classic scenes.
Outside of the visual improvements, the gameplay will also feature some new gameplay elements as well. A new Stay Calm mechanic will be added as an alternative to the Don’t Move mechanic from the original game for those who aren’t playing with a motion controller, in addition to other accessibility features. New collectibles will also be added, and some of these new items will be placed in new areas that will give existing characters new interactions.
And while Ballistic Moon has stated that the original story won’t change in the remake, the game’s prologue will be receiving an overhaul. Original scenes will be reframed, and new cutscenes will be added to give other characters more screentime in an effort to enhance their “emotional impact.” With a game focused so heavily on story and character interactions, these changes are perhaps going to be the most impactful to the remake.
Fans will get to experience all of these new additions when the Until Dawn remake comes to PlayStation 5 and PC on Oct. 4.
