After two days of non-stop video game action, one of the world’s premier speed running organizations has raised over $200,000 to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. GamesDoneQuick set up the event in just under 48 hours, grabbing speed runners, volunteers, and partners in a short space of time to raise money for the Houston food bank, in an effort to help those that lost their homes.
Hurricane Harvey has caused untold damage since landing on Aug. 25 and displaced thousands of people in the process. Some of the biggest games in speed running, such as Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Undertale, and Super Metroid, headlined the three-day event. Some of the top runners gave up their time at short notice to appear at the event. GamesDoneQuick has become known for it’s two annual speed running events, Awesome Games Done Quick and Summer Games Done Quick. The marathons showcase some of the best speed running games over a week, asking viewers to donate to a good cause. The GDQ events are some of the world’s biggest speed running events, bringing in millions of dollars for charity each year. The special Houston event ended with River Mccown’s speed run of Final Fantasy IV on the SNES. It was a suitable send off, considering the game represents the coming together of different people to overcome a threat bigger than themselves.
