These are Fortnite’s best hidden secrets, Easter eggs, and quirky trivia

There's a lot more to Fortnite than meets the eye.
This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Epic Games’ Fortnite is a quirky game. Easily the most popular video game on the planet to date, Fortnite: Battle Royale is as addicting as it is interesting. Fortnite features more than just building and shooting other enemies, too. The game is packed with wacky trivia, from throwbacks to Epic’s previous games to nods to the title’s amazing community.

From referencing games like Unreal Tournament to hidden gameplay features, Fortnite’s Easter eggs and trivia are legendary. Here’s some of the best secrets scattered around Fortnite’s world.

Fortnite’s greatest rescue mission

Fortnite version 5.1 is out, and alongside the patch, Epic decided to add a special Easter egg commemorating the game’s strangest rescue mission yet. While streamer Mr Muselk was playing Fortnite: Battle Royale in solo queue, he came across a stranded player named Chappadoodle at the bottom of a cliff and tried to initiate a rescue. After building an elaborate fort setup that would take his All-Terrain Kart to the bottom and let the player bounce back into the game, things quickly fell apart.

So to commemorate the botched rescue, Epic added a monument commemorating the viral scene, leaving a tombstone for Chappadoodle for players to stumble across. Rest in peace, Chappadoodle, we barely knew ye.

Before Epic became a household name thanks to Fortnite, the game development studio made gaming history decades ago with the Unreal Tournament series and its iconic Unreal engine. And players can find pieces of Unreal’s legacy found throughout Fortnite’s universe.

The biggest Easter egg left inside the game is a screenshot for “Facing Worlds,” an immensely popular Unreal Tournament map first introduced in the original Unreal Tournament. Also known as CTF-Face, the map casts players in capture-the-flag combat within a floating asteroid in the middle of space. Not every Fortnite player will recognize its iconic geography, but for some, it’s a throwback to simpler times when Epic unleashed one of the biggest competitive first-person shooters available around the world.

Goodbye, Tomato Head

Season 5 explained the dimension-altering rifts appearing throughout Fortnite: Battle Royale’s world, and for the most part, fans now know what happened to some of the missing items around Fortnite’s map, like the Durr Burger statue. But Tomato Head from Tomato Town’s Uncle Pete’s Pizza Pit remains oddly missing, and at this rate, he may never come back.

Visiting Tomato Town shows that Tomato Head is still gone, with a small “Goodbye” sign hanging out on the roof. That sign references the event itself, in which the Tomato Head left Fortnite’s world through a glowing rift, and many streamers stopped to watch the action play out. Whether Tomato Head will come back or not remains unclear, although some fans speculate that a new mascot may replace him in due time.

R.I.P. Dusty Depot

Want to know how Dusty Divot became a strange (yet oddly popular) foresty crater in the middle of Fortnite: Battle Royale’s map? Well, it wasn’t always Dusty Divot. Many seasons ago, it used to be called Dusty Depot.

When Fortnite’s Season 4 began, Epic smashed a crater straight into Dusty Depot, leaving players with a low-lying area to explore and fight over. The change was considered pretty huge at the time, and Season 5 further changed up the crater by adding in a forest overgrowth. To this day, Dusty Divot’s name has stuck, although Epic could very well change the entire area once again in future seasons.

All-Terrain Kart drifting

Part gameplay addition and part Mario Kart nod, Fortnite’s All-Terrain Kart features a neat quirk that can come in handy during duo and squad chases. Players that drift the Kart can receive a speed boost in two tiers, depending on how long they drift. The whole system mirrors Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s drifting and boosting system, down to the Kart’s physics and the drifting system’s length.

Whether building a boost is practical largely comes down to where you’re headed and how dangerous it is to drift. But as an added gameplay addition, it’s a pretty solid Easter egg, and a fun send up to one of the world’s best multiplayer games.

The abandoned Battle Bus

Not every Battle Bus passes through Fortnite’s island unscathed. Players can stumble across one abandoned in the middle of the map, seemingly downed while dropping off its players.

The crashed Battle Bus can be found on the mountain next to Shifty Shafts, where it rests on its side with its parachute on the ground. It’s unclear how the Battle Bus was brought down or if anyone made it out alive during the crash, as there’s no signs of gunfire or rocket damage. Suffice to say, it’s a pretty tragic moment, and it raises larger questions about Fortnite’s lore within the Battle Royale world.

On the brighter side, this Easter egg is a solid drop spot, because players can loot two chests and begin immediately scavenging for materials for building. So the circumstances aren’t all bad in the end!

Fortnite has crossplay support

If you’ve been playing Fortnite: Battle Royale on solo recently, you may not have realized that the game lets players across platforms play against each other. That means if you’re a PC gamer and your friends prefer playing Fortnite on Xbox One or Switch, you can still squad up with your buddies across consoles and drop together.

That said, there’s certain limits to Fortnite’s crossplay capabilities. While players on PC can play with any other console or platform available, from PlayStation 4 to mobile users, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One gamers can’t match up with PS4 users. For more information on how crossplay works, check out The OP’s guide to the entire system.
