Baldur’s Gate 3 custom maps are popping up as modders utilize tweaked level editor

Custom campaigns when?

The official Baldur’s Gate 3 modding tools, initially with no functionality for custom maps and campaigns, are allowing modders to create just that. Having been cracked by modder Siegfre, the tools can now be used for custom level design, and there are freshly made maps popping up already.

As first reported by PC Gamer, a YouTuber by the name of S has already produced a functional map set in the Avernus region of the broader Baldur’s Gate world. Players can only visit this area from the game’s Nine Hells on a few occasions, though it is a vital locaation for several characters found in the game’s main and side stories. S can be seen using Astarion while walking around a flaming landscape and along a river presumably of flowing lava, discovering items and loot along the way, indicating fully playable custom regions and campaigns could be around the corner.

The level is comprised of a myriad of different assets from other regions in Baldur’s Gate 3‘s official maps, though it’s highly likely keen and dedicated modders would create custom assets for these strange new maps. However, these tools were never intended to be official anyways, so it might be some time before we see actual massive progress, though the example set by S is already very impressive.

This isn’t the only custom level S has created with the unlocked set of tools. A few days prior to revealing their Avernus concept, the YouTuber showcased a castle sitting atop of a lonely cliff above the sea, walking and jumping around several locations.

For the uninitiated, Baldur’s Gate 3 received official mod support with a toolkit launched alongside the game’s massive Patch 7. However, they were limited, with Larian announcing it isn’t planning on supporting fully-fledged modding due to a lack of resources. That didn’t stop modders from doing things themselves, who, as PC Gamer reported, cracked the tools in only a couple of days and unlocked the potential for creating custom campaigns, levels, and a whole lot more.
