Players are already trying to prove that leaked Apex Legends character Octane is fake

If your excitement for the leaked Apex Legends character is in high gear, then you may want to tone it down a bit—Octane might not be real.

Reddit user thatblokewiththehat has compiled a list of reasons why they believe that the screenshots of a supposed upcoming Apex character are fake.

At the time of writing, the thread already has nearly 1,000 upvotes and many people in the community are adding on to thatblokewiththehat’s theories in the comments. Reasons given in the Reddit post for why the leak is fake range from minor to major. One minor issue the post indicates, for example, is that “High Speed Daredevil” would be the only nickname to contain three words.

A more serious accusation the post makes, however, takes aim at the two screenshots posted during the leak. Apparently, if you look at the original leak of Octane and compare it to the leak with the moveset, you’ll find subtle differences in the character models. The glow on his goggles is inconsistent and his wires appear to be in different places in the two photos.

Another more convincing reason raised by the post is the lack of items related to his abilities on Octane’s person. Every character in the game has some kind of item on their person that’s connected to one of their abilities. Bangalore has her smoke launcher, Pathfinder has his hook, and Caustic has two large tubes containing his barrels. The make-up of Octane seems to be random and dissociated with any of his proposed abilities.

Perhaps the most damning piece of evidence against the leaks indicated in the post is how at the bottom of the abilities screenshot, you can see the matchmaking icon. Someone running a build of the game with Octane in it wouldn’t be able to connect to the EA servers—unless they had some sort of special ability or access that the internet isn’t aware of.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if Respawn decides to comment on the existence of Octane. In the meantime, the community will surely be busy doing their own detective work.
