Sheen items in League are getting cool new visual effects

We'll take "Things we didn't know we wanted" for $800, Alex.

Sheen items in League of Legends—including the Trinity Force, Lich Bane, Iceborn Gauntlet, and the Sheen itself—are receiving brand new visual effects on their Spellblade passive, according to Riot’s post on the official game forums recently.

Some of these items, specifically Tri-Force and the Lich Bane, are among the most popular items in the game, and they’ve been a part of League for its entire nine-year history (as made apparent by their egregiously outdated icons). The Spellblade passive boosts the power of your next basic attack after using an ability, and it’s become a staple for all four items.

With Sheen’s popularity and history, we’re honestly surprised new visual effects haven’t been proposed before, especially after seeing a side-by-side comparison of the new effect with the old one. Let’s just say the icons aren’t the only things looking a little bit out of touch.

Unfortunately, Riot only provided an animated preview of the Tri-Force effect, but the same pulsing and glowing bits seem to be present on both the Lich Bane and Iceborn items as well. Either way, we should know for sure soon enough, because Riot is “feeling pretty good about moving forward” with them. That being said, we’ll probably see them on the PBE relatively soon, barring any large bugs or other issues.

There are some other item visual effects that are in need of updates, too, which we hope to see addressed after the Sheen changes go live. Some of these items include the Blade of the Ruined King active effect, the tiny arrows that fly out with the Runaan’s Hurricane passive, and especially those awfully outdated spooky ghosts from Twin Shadows.

If these Sheen changes do ship soon to the PBE, we assume it’ll be part of the Patch 8.15 testing cycle, which means we’re looking at a release in about three weeks.
