How to find every piece of evidence in the Burden of Proof quest in Starfield

Get ready to drag yourself across the galaxy.

If you’re doing the Crimson Fleet questline then you’re probably scratching your head over the Burden of Proof side mission. This is where Lt. Toft aboard the Vigilance asks you to collect evidence against the Crimson Fleet and its associates.

The aim is to gradually wear down the Fleet by taking out their lower-level members and partially affiliated contacts. The only problem is they don’t give you any clues where to find the evidence and some of it is on planets that have nothing to do with the Crimson Fleet questline.

This has, rightly, left many players frustrated with what’s been criticized as a less than ideally constructed quest. True, you can find evidence in several of the Crimson Fleet quests but many of them are well off the beaten path.

Lucky for you we’ve grinded out the entire thing and captured exactly where all of that pesky evidence is hiding. This way you can get all the credits, XP, and final reward for Burden of Proof.

The first piece of evidence is right behind Adler Kemp, the Crimson Fleet contact you interact with for the quest “Deep Cover.” You’ll find Kemp in the Broken Spear, the bar in Cedonia on Mars.

Evidence Locations on The Key

By completing the Deep Cover quest you’ll gain access to the Crimson Fleet’s base of operations—the Key. Here you’ll find five pieces of evidence: Three are on the station itself and two are associated with side quests.

The first piece of evidence you’ll find in the Key’s Ship Services office. It’s right on the counter with the window that faces out to the main area. Look for it in the corner perched atop what looks like a toaster.

The Voss’s Parts evidence is just above the command center. Take the stairs up and go left. You’ll find it on the counter above a bank of computers.

You’ll find the Mira’s Demise evidence slate in the Bunks section of the Key. Head straight back and take a left before the very last room. You’ll find it sitting on top of a green box.

Doctor’s Orders: Gennady Ayton Evidence Location

To get the Gennady Ayton evidence head to the clinic on the Key and speak to the doctor, Samina. She’ll lament her dwindling stock of health packs and ask you if you’ll pay her regular supplier a visit. You’ll head to the Narion system. The Clinic orbits the planet Narion and is a neighboring system to Alpha Centauri.

Go into the Clinic and to the right. There you’ll find Gennady Ayton. You’ll need to pass a persuasion check to get him to continue supplying the Fleet. If you fail the persuasion don’t worry, you can simply pickpocket Gennady for the key to the supply cache.

You’ll find the evidence on top of a stack of computers in his office beside a desk.

Reclaiming the Past Evidence Location

The bartender of the Last Nova, Bog, will ask you to help him recover a memento of a lost love. Only problem is it’s in a crate at the very heart of a mercenary base. Come loaded to bear because it’s going to be level 30 and above enemies you’ll be up against.

Fight you’re way through and the evidence will be in the crate along with the item you’ll need to complete the quest.

Echoes of the Past quest

Now that you’re in good with the Fleet you’ll be put through something of an initiation. Players will join Delgado, the leader of the Crimson Fleet, on a quest to find clues about Kryx’s Legacy. This will take you down to the prison below the Key, the Lock, on the planet Suvarov in the Kryx system. There are two pieces of evidence to be recovered on the quest Echoes of the Past.

The first piece of evidence is in a locker room in the D-Block section. You’ll find the slate sitting next to some cred sticks and a medical item. This item is essential so you’ll get a waypoint leading you straight to it.

Warden’s Log Location

You’ll find the Warden’s log evidence on a counter near his desk. You have to pass through this room as part of the quest so don’t worry about having to hunt for this one too much. However, since it isn’t necessary to complete the mission, you won’t get a specific waypoint to help you find it.

Breaking the Bank evidence locations

After completing Echoes of the Past you’ll move on to the next quest in the Crimson Fleet questline, Breaking the Bank. You’ve recovered a clue that reveals Kryx’s legacy isn’t some mystical treasure—”Legacy” is the name of a ship.

A GalBank ship, to be exact, and it’s loaded to the gills with credits. The catch? It disappeared ages ago. To find it you’ll need a GalBank executive’s credentials to access the GalBank archives at their headquarters in New Atlantis.

A Starliner, the Siren of the Stars, is your next stop. Once aboard you’ll get embroiled in an elaborate embezzlement scam being run by crooked GalBank executive, Larry Dumbrosky.

The first piece of evidence you can find in the Captain’s quarters in the Crew quarters. Captain Rokov, a former Crimson Fleet captain, is helping you on this quest. You’ll find the slate incriminating him on the shelf beside his bed.

As you progress through the quest you’ll eventually extract the incriminating evidence against Dumbrosky you need from Gabriel Vera, one of his co-conspirators in the embezzlement scheme.

The Best There Is evidence locations

Your next quest, The Best There Is, will have you sneaking aboard a secret UC research facility to steal a high tech tracking device that can locate the Legacy. A Crimson Fleet associate, Huan Daiyu, will help you get aboard.

You’ll meet her in New Atlantis at Kay’s House in the Well. You can find Huan on the second floor but the evidence you need is on the first floor in the kitchen. Go into Kay’s and through the plastic flaps in the back to reach the kitchen. You’ll find the slate on one of the counters.

Eubanks and Woods evidence location

The second piece of evidence found during this quest is in Gabriel Vogel’s lab. You’ll find it sitting on top of a push-cart in the corner of the room behind Vogel.

Absolute Power evidence locations

The next quest takes you to Neon to recover the technology you’ll need to survive the journey to the Legacy. The ship is surrounded by a deadly field of energy that will fry anything that enters it. To counter this, you’ll need to borrow the tech that powers the city of Neon.

The planet’s unique atmosphere produces frequent lightning strikes that are captured and converted into energy. It’s that same tech that will protect you from the energy field.

The Big Score evidence location

You’ll need to head to Madame Sauvage’s as part of the quest. Go past the door behind the bar and into the bedroom. You’ll find the slate on a table beside the bed.

The next stop is Generdyne’s Offices. Head up to the Trade Tower’s Generdyne Industries floor and speak to the receptionist. If you can pass a persuasion check he’ll give you a key to the safe that holds the evidence. If you fail you’ll need to pick the lock.

The next piece of evidence is on the bar in Euphorika’s Members Only Lounge. Note that to get in you’ll need to pay the hefty entrance fee, 5,000 credits, to get in.

Before moving on to the final quest, “The Eye of the Storm” in the Crimson Fleet questline, we recommend you pick up the other pieces of evidence scattered around the universe. This is the strangest part of the quest because there is absolutely no indication of where to find them.

Unless Bethesda expects you to wander around dozens of planets looking at every countertop for a data slate, we have to agree with the chorus of voices calling this quest a bit of a mess.

You’ll find the remaining data slates at various bars. We guess drunk pirates have a bad habit of leaving evidence of their crimes behind after one too many rum and cokes. The first one you’ll find on the bar in Hopetown. Hopetown is in the Valo system on the planet Polvo.

Head to the Porrima System next and to the Red Mile on Porrima III. You’ll find the slate on the bar by the vase.

Head to Alpha Centari and the planet Gagarin (named after the first man in space, Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin). You’ll find the slate at Lizzy’s Bar.

The Den evidence location

Head to the Den in the Wolf system and go straight. Look for the neon “open” sign and you’ll find the slate on a bar table by the balcony.

With that you’re ready to move on to “Eye of the Storm”, the final quest in the Crimson Fleet questline. Collecting the evidence in this order will save you a trip back to the vigilance.

One important thing to note is that if you side with the Fleet you will not be able to complete Burden of Proof so be forewarned—if you’ve got through all the trouble to get the slates then you have to back the UC.

The final slate can be found beside the corpse of Jasper Kryx himself. Kryx made his way to the Legacy without realizing it’d be a one-way trip. With no escape, the Legacy’s vault became Kryx’s tomb. A poetic end for the dastardly founder of the Crimson Fleet.

Once you escape the legacy head back to the Vigilance. They’ll be fighting off a pirate scouting party when you jump in so be ready to lend a hand in the fight.

With the pirates reduced to space dust, board the vigilance and talk to Lt. Toph. Give her all the evidence. She’ll still ask you if you have any more evidence but don’t panic, you’ve turned in absolutely everything.

Talk to Toph about why she joined SysDef and as she wraps up her tale she’ll give you her old sidearm, Momento Mori.

This legendary pistol deals an extra 30 percent damage on the next attack after hitting a target in their limbs. You’ll also get extra damage as your health goes down, and a small chance to demoralize the target. It of course comes tricked out with some deluxe attachments.

And thank goodness the reward is decent because dragging yourself all over the universe on this scavenger hunt was by far one of the least fun things we’ve done in Starfield.
