Mindfreak, after being down 0-2 in the best-of-five series, came back and defeated Evil Geniuses 3-2 to eliminate them from the tournament. The final game was a one-sided affair, as MF didn’t even let EG pick up a single round of Search and Destroy.

With the loss, Evil Geniuses finishes the tournament with a disappointing top 20 placing. Many people in the CoD community believed that EG would be much improved after bringing in former world champions Patrick “ACHES” Price and Bryan “Apathy” Zhelyazkov, as well as former FaZe Clan player Ian “Enable” Wyatt.

EG entered the tournament as one of the top 16 teams in the world, according to the pro point standings. They grabbed the 10th spot in the North American standings, securing pool play. But due to a 2-2 group stage where they lost to eUnited and FaZe, the team was put in the losers bracket to start Sunday.

Despite this, EG were still the favorites going into their match against Mindfreak—especially after MF went winless in Pool C while only winning two of their 14 maps.

But the reverse sweep may have hushed the crowd a little bit. After all, Evil Geniuses is a team with some of the most experienced and successful first-person-shooter players ever. And the team proved earlier this weekend that they could cause damage with their series win over Europe’s top team, Splyce.

Mindfreak has advanced on to the next round of the losers bracket, where they will try to keep their tournament hopes alive against Epsilon.
