How to get Dead Silence in Modern Warfare 2

Don't keep quiet about this field upgrade.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has snuck up onto consoles and PCs in its full release, with fans either sprinting around the map and fragging out or camping in corners and waiting for another kill to add to their killstreaks.

For players who like to dabble in a bit of sneaky gameplay, the Dead Silence perk is what you’re looking for. The perk has been around since the original Modern Warfare series and has caused players with $500 headphones controller-breaking grief.

Fortunately, for players who just can’t wait, the Dead Silence Field Upgrade is available in the pre-made loadouts you can select at the start of a match. The Phantom – Rusher loadout has Dead Silence pre-equipped in the Field Upgrade slot.

For those eager to add it to their loadouts, though, there’s a bit of a wait involved. The ability to add the Dead Silence perk to your loadout is unavailable as soon as you start the game. Players must embark on a journey through the MW2 rank system and make it to level 51.

Once you’ve reached level 51, players can put the famous Call of Duty field upgrade into a customize loadout with all their other favorite weapons and equipment.

The Dead Silence Field Upgrade has a fast recharge, so you should be earning it multiple times per match, even if you’re struggling to rack up the kills and points it takes to charge it up quickly.

Once you have it charged, press the R1 and L1 or RB and LB buttons to start using Dead Silence. On PC, the Field Upgrade button is the X key by default.

Once enabled, players’ footsteps are silenced, and Recon is negated. Dead Silence can be extended by earning gun, melee, or throwing knife kills, so you could theoretically keep your footsteps quiet for the duration of the match if you never stop getting kills and stay alive throughout its duration.
