The next version of the Playground LTM will allow team selection

Sounds like a good thing for the competitive community.

Epic Games is planning on adding a highly-desired feature to its Playground Limited Time Mode in the next version.

In a post on the Fortnite: Battle Royale subreddit, Epic employee /u/JustMooney1 revealed Playground will be disabled again on July 12 so the developers can improve it and release the next version. The biggest addition in that version will allow players to select teams within the game mode.

Team selection allows much more than just players linking up with their friends. They will have the ability to play in one-vs-one or two-vs-two, use aim assist on controllers, edit others’ structures, highlight teammates on the map, and several smaller features.

These additions will likely be welcomed by the competitive community, a group of players that have long sought after team selections. Without this feature, competing duo teams—most notably in the weekly Friday Fortnite tournaments—have had to queue for a game as a squad in order to play together.

Epic showed off what its observer mode could do at the Fortnite E3 event last month. With an expanding game mode in Playground and new esports-friendly features, it appears the game will be more prepared for competitive play. Especially by the time the inaugural Fortnite World Cup rolls around.

Players may have had to wait a little bit before trying out Playground due to extensive matchmaking issues, but it certainly seems Epic is showing off what a fully-creative mode can do for Fortnite: Battle Royale.
