In one of the most shocking results of the 2018 Call of Duty World League Championship, eUnited swept Red Reserve, a team that had reached multiple grand finals this season.
Throughout the WWII season, it had been tough for eUnited to break through and pick up big wins over championship contenders. But with this sweep over the best European team and one of the favorites to win the tournament, eUnited may be headed for gold at CWL Champs.
After their statement victory over Red, eUnited’s Preston “Prestinni” Sanderson fielded questions from several reporters.
How does it feel to come off of that sweep?
Prestinni: I heard [Red Reserve] had never been swept before—and we’re the first team to do it. We hadn’t even beaten them this year until now, so it feels really good to beat them because they’ve been our hard counters—them and FaZe. They’re tough matchups for us.
What did you guys have to do to set yourselves up for a 3-0 shutout?
That was really just all motivation and speeches before the matches. We got hyped, listened to music, and vibed out. We felt good going in. You know, it was just the Arcitys show to be honest with you. I’ve never seen a better series out of anyone ever. That was insane. He really set the tone for us after he 1-v-3 clutched the second map. That really set the tone. We ended up coming back and winning 6-3, and from there we knew could definitely win Flak Tower.
Who poses the biggest threat to your team?
One of the heavy-hitter teams, Rise. I feel like we’d rather play against tK than Rise but both are super solid teams. I just feel like we match up against tK a little bit better. But Rise—we’ve beaten them; we’re like 4-2 against them this year. I feel like we can beat anyone here, but the biggest threats are those two teams.
You guys have struggled to finish out maps in the past. What do you do to block out the bad results?
We don’t really do anything. We just discovered how to clutch up in the past month. We worked a lot and we figured out how to play SnD. I don’t know—every time we watched a round 11, it was just us playing stupid, not playing a good strat, or playing too slow. It was just [our opponents] taking advantage of us making mistakes and we’ve figured out how to counter that. We’re a lot better at SnD now.
What does your team have to push you into the grand finals?
We have motivation. We’ve been losing all year, and we’re just sick of it. We finally rallied the troops and decided it’s getting real old. We’re all motivated, we got the fire to win, and Alec’s on his anime grind. He’s shooting insane right now. He’s got the powers—I’m in safe hands with that guy carrying me.
With their win over Red Reserve, eUnited has secured a top 12 finish and a matchup with UNILAD tomorrow in the winners bracket quarterfinals.
