Only player from last year’s Hearthstone World Championship finals is still eligible for this year’s edition of the event after a weekend of surprise results in North America and Europe.
Hakjun “Kranich” Baek of Team Dignitas, who reached the semifinals of the 2014 World Championships, will play in the Asia-Pacific regional finals once again—the only one out of the sixteen 2014 World Championship competitors to reach their region’s finals.
With four players advancing from the event in Taipei next weekend, Baek is considered a heavy favorite. His main competition will come from Taiwan’s He “Pinpingho” Guoping and fellow Korean and OGN Masters semifinalist Taesang “Taesang” Yoon.
Joining the two Koreans and two representatives of Taiwan will be “Kno” of Japan, “neilyo” from the SEA region and the two Australia and New Zealand finalists—”EdwardElric” and “Deckizz”.
Baek’s fellow 2014 semifinalist Daniel “DTwo” Ikuta—attempting to qualify through the Japanese qualifier rather than North America this year—failed to make it past the national event. Jung Hwan “RenieHouR” Lee of Korea had a disappointing season following his appearance at the 2014 finals, not even making it into the 40-player Korean national qualifier.
Though there are four spots available in the World Championship finals, the players will battle to a single winner for the $25,000 prizepool.
