Just days before the game’s 19th anniversary, Blizzard has announced StarCraft Remastered—a high definition remake of StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion.
Retaining the same gameplay as the original game, StarCraft Remastered features 4K ultra HD graphics as well as upgraded audio. The re-release will include updated unit models, buildings and tilesets.
With StarCraft and the expansion’s campaigns, the release will include more than 50 single player missions. Original cinematics within the single player campaign have been updated to 1080p resolution, and Blizzard has added new comic book style illustrations for introductions and mission interludes.
Since news of the re-release was first rumored earlier this month, the official announcement has been hotly anticipated. While StarCraft is no longer the esports phenomenon it once was, it still retains a strong cult following and is hugely popular in Korea.
StarCraft Remastered will be released this summer.
To prepare for StarCraft Remastered, Blizzard will be updating StarCraft: Brood War to version 1.18 later this week. This update will include bug fixes and improvements, including the ability to rebind keys, an observer mode, new anti-cheat measures, compatibility improvements for Windows 7, 8.1, and 10; and more.
Once this update is live, the original game will be free to download and play.
