The two top-rated Counter-Strike: Global Offensive teams from Denmark just finished the most exciting game yet at the StarSeries Season 3 finals.
Taking place in Kiev between April 5 to 9, the StarSeries Season 3 finals features 16 of the best CS:GO teams in the world fighting for an overall prize pool of $300,000.
After 35 rounds, North were able to take down reigning Valve Major champions Astralis in the group stage, after what was initially a very back-and-forth game on Inferno. The first half of the map went overwhelmingly in North’s favor, the team gave away just four rounds to their Danish rivals. But once Astralis got to play on the Terrorist side, the reigning Valve Major champions put up an identical roundscore, and forced the map to an overtime scenario.
The largest saving grace for Astralis was Markus “Kjaerbye” Kjærbye, who put on a star-level performance with 33 total kills. Astralis’ always-consistent Nicolai “device” Reedtz also stepped up on the map’s second half, and almost single-handedly secured his team the overtime following a one-on-three clutch on the 26th round.
Once into overtime, however, things quickly spiraled out of control for Astralis. Aside from winning the opening round, North answered back by winning four rounds in a row, effectively securing Inferno, and their spot at the top of the standings.
While still being one of the top-rated teams in the world, North’s victory is still a considerable upset given the level of Astralis in the past months. How this will affect Astralis’ next match-up in the group stage remains to be seen, but right now it’s safe to say that North is looking like one of the best teams present at the event.
