Berlin is calling once again for the 10 teams hoping to win the 2017 EU LCS Summer Split.
Last season, G2 Esports beat Unicorns of Love in a gripping final to take the organization’s third title in three splits. Origen went from semifinalists at Worlds 2015 to the EU Challenger Series after being relegated. ROCCAT stunned Europe by being the only team to beat G2 Esports all split and end G2’s 400-day unbeaten streak.
All 10 teams will be separated into two groups of five and will be fighting for the ultimate prize: the right to be Europe’s No. 1 seed at Worlds 2017 on Sept. 23 in China.
You can watch all of the games on Twitch beginning June 1. All EU LCS matches are shown on a single Twitch channel, EULCS1. Here is everything you need to know for the 2017 Summer Split of the EU LCS.
The teams
G2 Esports
G2 are coming off their impressive form at the Mid-Season Invitational where the team finished second overall, losing to SK Telecom T1 of the LCK in the finals. They will look to add another title to the organization’s growing trophy cabinet and continue to represent EU as its No. 1 seed.
Unicorns of Love
After missing out on the EU LCS title, Unicorns of Love will have to work even harder to catch up to G2. This will be the second split for Andrei “Xerxe” Dragomir in the EU LCS. The Unicorns hope to see a repeat performance of Xerxe’s heroics from the previous split to better the team’s chances of winning its first EU LCS title.
Fnatic
After failing to qualify for Worlds 2016, Fnatic looked to rebuild its roster around ADC Martin “Rekkles” Larsson. The organization saw top laner, Paul “sOAZ” Boyer, return to the team after a brief stint with Origen and the squad ended the Spring Split third overall.
Misfits
After an impressive debut season in the EU LCS where they finished fourth overall, Misfits will have to continue its form without star jungler Lee “KaKAO” Byung-kwon, who was replaced by former ROCCAT jungler, Nubar “Maxlore” Sarafian. Maxlore isn’t as technically gifted as KaKAO, but the communication improvements should bring better stability throughout each lane.
H2k-Gaming
H2k had a poor showing in the Spring Split after replacing the team’s bot lane with two Korean imports. The return of mid laner Fabian “Febiven” Diepstraten gave H2k fans hope that the team would be able to challenge for the EU LCS title this year, but things didn’t go according to plan. H2k now faces the tough task of improving their communication to stake a claim for one of EU’s spots at Worlds 2017.
Splyce
From third seed at Worlds to barely making playoffs, Splyce will have to drastically look at last season’s poor performance if they have any ambitions of surviving the Summer Split. With the departure of the team’s long-time head coach, all eyes will be on Fayan “Gevous” Pertijs to see if he can have the same impact that Jacob “YamatoCannon” Mebdi had on the team last year.
Team Vitality
Vitality looked to strengthen their team after barely avoiding relegation in the Spring Split, bringing in YamatoCannon from Splyce and support player Oskar “VandeR” Bogdan, who famously made it to the semifinals of Worlds last year with H2k-Gaming. The team is looking beyond its troubles to challenge the EU LCS in the Summer Split.
ROCCAT
ROCCAT hopes to start off better this time around after the team’s resurgence in the second half of the Spring Split, going from relegation scare to playoff ambitions. All eyes will be on the rookie of the team, Milo “Pridestalker” Wehnes, to see if he can fill the void left by Maxlore.
Mysterious Monkeys
This German organization not only bought the Misfits Academy EU LCS slot, but also its roster, giving the team a great chance in their debut EU LCS season. The former Misfits Academy members were able to overcome Schalke 04, who went undefeated in the EU CS Spring Split. The Mysterious Monkeys will try to utilize their synergy to kickstart their Summer Split campaign.
Ninjas in Pyjamas
After buying the Fnatic Academy spot, NiP is returning to the EU LCS after a four year absence from the league. With an entirely new roster, NiP will need to find synergy in a short amount of time before the start of the EU LCS.
