League of Legends creators Riot Games and its major shareholder, China’s Tencent Holdings, have begun development on a mobile version of the hit game, according to a Reuters report.

The game may already be more than a year into its development, according to one of three anonymous sources in the report. That said, the game still won’t release this year. Tencent has tried to replicate League of Legends and the game’s popularity by releasing a pair of mobile MOBAs, Honor of Kings and Arena of Valor. While these titles were hits in China, neither have made much impact in the West.

The move, according to the Reuters report, is in part to help expand the game’s user base in Asia, where mobile gaming is especially popular.

A mobile League of Legends title could add a whole other dimension to the mobile gaming scene. Games like Clash Royale, Vainglory, and Free Fire dominate the scene. And while all these titles have huge followings, none of them have the cachet—or 10-year history—of a major title like League.

At this point, it’s still unclear exactly how the mobile port will be like its desktop-based predecessor. And it’s also not clear if Riot has any plans to pair mobile and desktop users. A PC user would inherently have a massive advantage over a mobile user, meaning a separate mobile queue is likely.
