Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League turned out to be a huge flop, and now, the developer behind the game, Rocksteady Studios, has reportedly been hit by layoffs.
According to Eurogamer on Sept. 2, Rocksteady staff said the studio is laying off staff following the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The QA department has reportedly reportedly been cut by more than half, from 33 employees down to 15, with redundancies extending to other departments, too. Affected jobs include numerous junior roles and several team members who have been at the studio for more than five years.
Eurogamer’s sources said the layoffs in the QA department included workers with specialized knowledge, leaving the team shouldered with more work, and that senior management has acknowledged the product’s quality will suffer as a result.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Entertainment reported a $200 million revenue hit due to the poor performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game has struggled to attract players due to technical issues, underwhelming seasonal content, and “hideous” cosmetics that left remaining fans furious. These days, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League can hardly reach above 150 concurrent players, according to SteamDB.
Rocksteady previously mentioned it intends to “complete its currently announced roadmap” of post-launch content. This includes four seasons (with the first two already live) featuring new playable characters, environments, activities, and more. It’s unclear how the layoffs will affect the release of the remaining content, considering season one arrived later than fans hoped.
