If your Bungie name has unexpectedly changed in the past few days, the good news is Bungie’s working on it. The bad news is you might be stuck with your new name for a little longer.
In an X thread on Aug. 15, the Destiny 2 development team announced it released a “server-side change” to prevent this issue from affecting accounts moving forward. “We are continuing to investigate options to address player accounts that were impacted. This will take some time as our path forward will be dependent on fixing the underlying issue,” the post said.
Bungie plans to distribute an additional name-change token to all players at a later date to make up for the issue. In the meantime, players affected by this bug are stuck with their shiny new default Guardian name. There’s no target date for token distribution yet, but the developer promises to address this “as soon as possible.”
The issue with the Bungie name moderation tool started after the weekly reset on Aug. 13. Many players’ names changed even if it didn’t violate any rules, so if you haven’t logged on this week, check whether your name is still there. Everyone affected now has a default Guardian name followed by a four-number tag.
You can change the name if you still have the initial name-change token (each account gets one per lifetime). Otherwise, you have to wait until Bungie gives out another one.
