That big Overwatch PTR patch? It’s not as major as it might seem

Junkrat and Roadhog players will be happy about it, though.

Blizzard is already rolling out Patch 1.14 on the Overwatch public test region—and while it may be a big file, it doesn’t make that many significant changes.

It might not be as major as it initially sounds but it will certainly impact the game, especially for Junkrat and Roadhog players—and potentially for dataminers. Overwatch lead software engineer Bill Warnecke wrote on Reddit that Patch 1.14 will include adjustments to the game’s file formats, which is why the patch is so large.

“We’re using the background downloader so we don’t overload the client distribution servers with such a large patch, and instead let it roll out slowly over the next couple of days,” Warnecke said.

Warnecke didn’t elaborate on the file format adjustments, but it’s possible they could hinder future datamining efforts. If speculation is correct, we’re going to have a hard time spoiling Overwatch updates for ourselves in the future. As for the hero adjustments, Blizzard is tweaking Australia’s dangerous duo: Junkrat and Roadhog.

Roadhog has been notoriously difficult to balance, and Overwatch principal designer Geoff Goodman confirmed last week that they’re still playing with him. In Patch 1.14 Roadhog will see a defensive buff, which will hopefully increase his survivability. He’s likely to take 50 percent less damage when healing, as well as move full speed while using his Take A Breather ability.

Junkrat’s ultimate ability, RIP-Tire, is getting a buff on the Overwatch PTR in Patch 1.14. Blizzard is experimenting with making its movement speed and health stronger, but it won’t make both changes. Either option should make the RIP-Tire a bit more reliable, though. His mobility will be increased with an adjustment to the Concussion Mine, allowing Junkrat more options against hard to hit heroes.

These changes are likely to hit the Overwatch PTR in a few days. More hero adjustments will likely be unveiled before before this patch hits the live server.
