PlayerUnknown: “I want to find someone who creates a mod for my game that propels them to fame”

PUBG started as an Arma 3 mod, and PlayerUnknown wants to continue the trend.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has conquered the gaming world since its Early Access release in March. With millions of players, an appearance at gamescom, and huge improvements rolling out every month—it’s hard to imagine that PUBG started off as Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene’s very own Arma 3 mod.

Every game has to start somewhere though, and game mods are an excellent tool for turning infant ideas into something real. Greene wants to gives players of his game the same chance that Arma gave him, so he’ll be allowing mods in PUBG, according to his interview with CNET.

“I want to try to find someone who creates a game mode or a mod for my game that propels them to fame, and gets them to make their own game too. I want to find the next PlayerUnknown,” Greene told CNET.

Before you get your hopes up, it doesn’t sound like it’ll be any time soon. Greene mentioned that PUBG’s dev team has to figure out a way to allow tweaking to the game without falling into the realm of piracy or turning the game into an open source. They’re not there yet, but it may be a perfect feature to push with the release of the full game later this year. Remember, PUBG is still in Early Access, so although it may seem like there’s a lot there now, the next few months will still be jammed with more features.

Even after the game’s full release, though, Greene doesn’t intend to leave it alone like most high budget AAA titles on the market. The plan is to update the game consistently over the next decade to keep it up to modern standards and expectations, much like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends.

There are a lot of features on the horizon already for the game, including two new maps and a ton of skins and weapons. The new gamescom event crates are already out, and similar events are likely to be a regular thing in the future. With the game’s release not far off, it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see more and more of these new features pushed out soon.
