Riot is giving back Aatrox’s banner wings

This one's for you, old Aatrox mains.

Aatrox’s update was one of the most divisive in League of Legends’ recent history.

A large portion of players criticizing the large scale redesign were the old Aatrox’s biggest fans from his dedicated Reddit community. One of their biggest complaints was that the new version lost his banner-shaped wings. Well, Riot’s bringing them back, as of yesterday’s PBE update.

These new wings are shaped mostly like his old design, but they’re significantly smaller than the wings he sprouts during his ultimate. These wings, unlike his old ones, will also be toggle-able—you’ll be able to turn them on and off using a control+5 command in-game.

This is certainly one of the more dramatic design changes Riot has made after the release of a large champion update to appease the community. It makes sense that the design team would go the extra mile for Aatrox, though, considering how disappointing his design was before the rework.

That’s also why he was updated to begin with, most likely. Most other large scale updates go to the champions that were released within the first few waves of champions at the game’s start, but Aatrox was released much later—during season three. The reason he was chosen for an update before any of the other extremely old champions that probably need it, too, was because his design was just that big of a letdown.

Unfortunately, if you’re a big fan of these wings coming for Aatrox, you’re going to have to wait just a little bit longer to use them in-game. This patch cycle lasts one week longer than the normal two-week cycles, so Patch 8.14 won’t arrive for another two weeks.
