Former Meta Athena main tank Kim “Modern” Su-hoon has signed with Australian side Blank Esports for Contenders Australia Season 1, the player announced on Twitter yesterday.

Modern never found success on Meta Athena, only securing one win in Season 3 and missing out on Contenders Korea Season 1 2019 after coming fourth in Trials. He does have a Contenders title to his name, however, after defeating Blank 4-2 in Contenders Pacific Season 1 with Detonator Korea. He also previously played for Flash Lux during the APEX era.

Modern had hinted at an international move in recent days, posting questions about what to bring on long haul flights, as well as documenting his journey on Twitter. He comes in to replace Joshua “Knellery” Knell, who is still without a contract for Season 1 2019.

It’s Modern’s first appearance on an English-speaking roster, and there are naturally concerns surrounding communication around such a crucial role on the team. Moving to New Zealand might help alleviate some of these worries, as well as Blank picking up ex-Last Night’s Leftovers and Team Canada coach Alexander “Sword” Szymkiewicz to lead the team in Season 1 2019.

Blank Esports were the first Overwatch team in Australia to adopt a team-house model, now set up in Auckland, New Zealand. The team finished Season 3 in 5-8th with a 3-2 regular season record, before losing to Heist in the quarter-finals 3-0.

Overwatch Contenders Australia goes back on Feb. 24. You can watch it on the Overwatch Contenders Twitch channel.
