How to add multi-factor authentication to your Riot Games account

Riot Games announced the launch of multi-factor authentication (2FA) on Wednesday in an effort to combat account misuse and further its vision of player security. Players will be able to secure their accounts by authenticating each login via email with this feature, instead of the earlier iteration where prompts only occurred when logging in from a new or unverified device.

Adding 2FA to your Riot Games account

Here’s how you can enable multi-factor authentication:

1. Navigate to the official Riot Games login page
2. Sign in to your account
3. Look for the banner on the top of the page that writes “Two-Factor authentication is now available”
4. Click on “Enable 2FA”
5. Check the respective email attached to your Riot Games account for a confirmation email and click “Enable Two-Factor Authentication” within.

Players that select the “stay signed in” option while logging in to the game client will only be prompted for the verification once. However, if this option is not selected, the email authentication will be required for each login. This way, you will have peace of mind even while playing a quick game of VALORANT on a public computer. Account safety has been a major issue since the founding of Riot Games with players complaining over the years about hacking attempts that ruined accounts that they had racked up hundreds of hours on. Director of Security David Rook took to Twitter to announce that since forming the product security team at Riot Games just over a year ago, he made it one of his priorities to strengthen the security engineering that impacted players. The current iteration of Riot Games’ multi-factor authentication being released only supports email, with no exact date on when other types like a phone or software-based solution (e.g. the Google Authenticator app) will be available. Nevertheless, it is a step in the right direction and the team has made it clear that updates will be coming later this year.
