One of the most intriguing secrets in BG3 is Ansur’s Lair, home to a Wyrm bound to protect the city. You’ll have to decipher Duke Ulder Ravengard’s book to learn how to reach it in Wyrm’s Rock Prison. Here’s how to get inside Ansur’s Lair in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Find Ansur’s Lair in Baldur’s Gate 3
To find Ansur’s Lair in Baldur’s Gate 3, travel to Wyrm’s Rock Prison, defeat the guards, and use a lightning spell on two dragon-head torches in a hidden hallway to reveal the secret entrance.
Here’s how to find Ansur’s Lair in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Travel to Wyrm’s Rock Prison: You can reach it through Wyrm’s Rock Fortress or by using the sewers beneath the city.
- Be Prepared for Hostility: If you’ve previously freed Duke Ulder Ravengard, Lord Gortash and his followers will treat you as hostile when entering the fortress.
- Defeat the Guards: Once inside Wyrm’s Rock Prison, you’ll need to fight all guards you encounter.
- Find the Hidden Hallway: After entering the prison, take the first left down the hallway to find a wall with a brick out of place and two dragon-head torches.
- Use a Lightning Spell: Cast a lightning spell on both dragon-head torches to change their flames from orange to blue.
- Reveal the Secret Entrance: Once both torches are lit, a secret entrance to Ansur’s Lair will be revealed.
Finding the entrance to Ansur’s Lair in BG3
First, you need to travel to Wyrm’s Rock Prison. You can reach it by either going through Wyrm’s Rock Fortress or taking the sewers beneath the city. You might want to be cautious, though, as if you know about Ansur, then you had to break Ulder Ravengard out of the Iron Throne prison. This will make Lord Gortash and his followers at Wyrm’s Rock extremely upset, and they will treat you as a hostile when you enter the fortress.
I recommend taking the sewers if possible so you can avoid all of the combat. Of course, you can also go through the fortress and deal with Gortash’s army and the rest of the combatants sooner rather than later.
Unlocking the Entrance: The Torches That Open Ansur’s Lair
Once you reach the prison, you will likely have to defeat some prison guards. After that, take the first left down the hallway and all you will see are some crates and a wall with a brick out of place. You might also notice a Dragon Head Torch on the left side of the wall. This torch has a brother facing the opposite way on the other wall as well.
Light the Torches to Unlock Ansur’s Lair
All you need to do to open Ansur’s Lair now is use any lightning spell on these two torches. This will turn their flames from orange to blue, and once they are both lit, will reveal a secret entrance through the wall. If you don’t have a character with a lightning spell, you could use a scroll as well. I had Gale in my party, so all I had to do was use Shocking Grasp on both of the torches.
And that’s all you need to do to enter Ansur’s Lair in Baldur’s Gate 3. You can keep heading down the path to reach four different Chamber areas, which need to be completed if you want to find Ansur and complete the Duke’s quest in BG3. I explained how to pass some of those Chambers in recent guides, which you can check out to make your time in the lair a little easier.
What is in Ansur’s Lair?
When you finally access the lair, you’ll encounter Ansur, an undead dragon with a tragic past connected to Balduran. Ansur is a powerful level 17 enemy with a large health pool, capable of using devastating lightning-based attacks, including the deadly Stormheart Nova.
To defeat Ansur, it’s crucial to focus on crowd control and use defensive spells like Globe of Invulnerability to protect your party from massive damage. Alongside Ansur, you’ll face additional water-based enemies, making the fight even more challenging.
Defeating Ansur rewards you with unique items such as Balduran’s Giantslayer and the Helm of Balduran, both of which offer significant advantages in your ongoing adventure.
