Swedish media group Modern Times Group (MTG) has reportedly purchased Turtle Entertainment, the parent company of esports giant ESL, according to report from Golem.de.
MTG is no stranger to esports, and currently operates Viagame, who run Counter-strike, Hearthstone, Dota 2, and League of Legends tournaments.Â
MTG was also reported to be a part of the ESL, Vulcun, and Twitch Counter-strike “super league” that, in its final format, was run just between ESL and ESEA. If true, MTG’s purchase of ESL could signify a combination of multiple esports ventures under one roof.
The report doesn’t state how much the deal was for, and ESL politely declined to comment when asked for confirmation about the report, but Golem.de insists that ESL staffers have welcomed the deal “positively,” citing increased job security amidst the often-turbulent industry of esports.
Fans hoping the deal proves real could be in for a real treat, especially as the purchase of ESL by MTG would almost certainly mean esports finally getting the television circulation it deserves.
ESL declined to comment on this story.
