The Olympics has helped Assassin’s Creed Unity more than double player numbers

Wait, AC Unity? Why that one?

Assassin’s Creed Unity, Ubisoft’s 2024 open-world stealth action game, has seen an increase in player numbers since the Paris Olympics started on July 26. The increase is likely due to the Olympics taking place in the same city as AC Unity, albeit with a few centuries in between.

As spotted by PCGamesN, Unity‘s player population and sales have seen a bump on Steam Charts since the Olympics started. On July 26, Unity had 729 players, but that number has steadily risen since and it’s reached a 24-hour peak player count of 2,219 (as of Aug. 2)

Many gamers are visiting Paris to enjoy the Olympics, so it’s safe to assume some want to know what it would feel like to walk the city’s roofs (and perhaps kill a few guards)—and Assassin’s Creed Unity offers just that. Set in Paris during the French Revolution, Assassin’s Creed Unity offers a solid recreation of 18th-century Paris.

AC Unity is often considered one of the weaker games in the AC series, if not the worst. The game was plagued with bugs and game-breaking issues at launch. It was so bad that Ubisoft had to scrap plans for future DLC and gave away the first (and only) one for free to all players.

Sometimes, real-life events push players back to old games. We’ve seen this happen with Fallout 4 (when the Fallout TV series came out) and even during the COVID-19 lockdowns, which saw players flocking to games such as Plague Inc

This isn’t the first time, AC Unity has enjoyed an increased player count years after launch. In 2019, following the Notre Dame fire, Ubisoft gave AC: Unity for free to all Ubisoft Connect (then known as UPlay).

Assassin’s Creed games do an amazing job of accurately recreating historical cities and monuments, so if you also want a taste of Paris, it could be worth revisiting Unity.
