Right now, it’s Jan. 21 in Japan, which means that it’s been 20 years since the original Super Smash Bros. game for the Nintendo 64 was released.

Since that fateful day, we’ve seen a bunch of games released for multiple Nintendo consoles, including Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube, Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, and, most recently, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch.

No one from Nintendo could have expected such a small game to boom into one of its biggest franchises all these years later, spawning multiple sequels that have included some of the biggest characters in video game history.

The timing for the franchise’s birthday couldn’t be more perfect, too, since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released early last month. The title has since gone on to sell millions worldwide and become one of the biggest games of the 2018 holiday season.

After celebrating the series’ 20th anniversary, all we need to do is wait for Nintendo to release its next home console so we can get yet another installment in the franchise.
