What’s up guys! Today I’m going to do something a little different, usually I stick to just deck guides and going over what you can play in the current meta but every once in awhile I like to find topics that can help a player gain a little more knowledge to help them steer their decks better. In this case, we’re going to be looking at the RNG of your Spiteful Summoner summons for the Spiteful Priest deck and also the new Spiteful Druid deck that’s going around which use Free from Amber, Mind Control and Ultimate Infestation to pull giant minions. This guide should help you get a better idea of what to expect when you’re summoning minions and how to utilize things like Taunt and Charge to help finish a game.
First, let’s take a look at what’s available from the 8-Mana cost minion pool.
8-Mana Minion RNG
The 8-mana minion pool consists of all the classes since Spiteful Summoner doesn’t restrict you when it comes to summoning a minion. This is also the biggest and most random pool because it has 26 minions to pull from. I’ve sorted them into groups to make it easier.
No Abilities: 46%
Sindragosa, Kalimos, Primal Lord, Doomcaller, Eldritch Horror, Gruul, King Togwaggle, Marin the Fox, Medivh, the Guardian, The Boogeymonster, Tortollan Primalist with Special Additions: Geosculptor Yip, Violet Wurm
These are minions with no abilities and just big stats. There’s a wide variety of what you can get but for 6-mana to get a 4/4 and even the lowest attack/health on this list, you’re still getting a pretty big advantage. If your opponent is running a class like Druid or Paladin which doesn’t have much direct removal in the current meta, even something like Eldritch Horror can finish the game in just a few turns. Some special additions to this list are Geosculptor Yip who doesn’t really do anything except give you an extra 1/1 since you’re playing Priest, and Violet Wurm which has a nice Deathrattle in case your opponent can Twisting Nether the field but a bunch of 1/1s doesn’t really help you anyways since it will block your next turn from playing any new minions. For the sake of this guide, I’m considering them “No Abilities”.
Special Additions: Geosculptor Yip, Violet Wurm
Charge: 11.5%
Al’Akir the Windlord, Grommash Hellscream, Charged Devilsaur
This is an important category because these are the minions that can really get you out of a touch situation by helping you remove something pesky or in Charged Devilsaurs case, finish the game. When it comes to Free from Amber this category becomes even stronger since you can Discover them and find that Charged Devilsaur or Al’akir the windlord that you need to win. We will go over that in another section down below but it’s still good to know that when you drop Spiteful Summoner on Turn 6, you have a 1/10 chance (approximately) to get a free Charge with him.
Taunt: 18.5%
Grizzled Guardian, Ironbark Protector, Tirion Fordring, Primordial Drake, The Lich King
Another very important category because this can save your life by giving you a minion to hold off your opponent’s field. Say you’re at 10 life and your opponent has 15 damage worth of minions on the field, your only answer might be to play Spiteful Summoner and hope to get a big taunt minion to save you. Once again this is another category that becomes a lot more precise when you can Discover with Free from Amber but it’s still good to know that Spiteful Summoner is a card that can help you survive if it’s your only answer in your hand with a 20% chance for a Taunt.
Removal/Survival: 11.5%
Anomalus, Ragnaros, Lightlord, Grand Archivist
These are cards that still have a way of helping you survive if you’re looking for an answer. Ragnaros, Lightlord can heal you for 8 health if you make sure your minions don’t have any damage on them, or he could still get lucky. Anomalus is mostly a bad card to see pop up but sometimes it’s an answer if you’re facing down a giant field and can still survive for a turn to wipe it all away. Grand Archivist is an answer because it can pull Free from Amber or Mind Control from your deck to cast it for free, either giving you a free minion which can be a Taunt/Charge or can steal a minion from your opponent. If your opponent has no field, it won’t cast Mind Control and will always cast Free from Amber, just another tip.
Extra Abilities: 11.5%
Giant SandWorm, Kathrena Winterwisp, Rotface
These are minions with abilities that are still beneficial to you. Kathrena Winterwisp can pull Corridor Creeper from your deck which is a nice big 5/5 or 6/6 if you played Prince Keleseth. Rotface can get you free legendaries which can be big or small and have abilities like Taunt or Charge. And lastly, Giant SandWorm has the ability to clear a board with its ability if it can survive a turn and get some good attacks in.
10-Mana Minion RNG
These are your 10-mana minions that you will get off of Spiteful Summoner + Mind Control or Ultimate Infestation. It is very important to note that there are no 10-mana Taunt or Charge minions, so if you’re looking to find a Taunt to survive for an extra turn, hope you don’t flip a Mind Control as a Priest and if you’re playing the Spiteful Druid deck with only Ultimate Infestation in the deck, maybe Y’shaarj, rage unbound into Taunt but that’s your only hope.
No Abilities: 82%
Kun the Forgotten King, C’thun, Deathwing, Faceless Behemoth, N’zoth, the corruptor, Sea Giant, Ultrasaur, Yogg-saron, Hope’s End with special addition: Tyrantus
These are your basic big stat minions that have useless battlecries that you’ll never use. Honestly, they’re still great to get except for the smaller stats like C’thun and Kun the forgotten king but when you consider paying 6 mana for a 4/4 and a 6/6 or a 4/4 and a 7/7, that’s still extremely powerful and can still push for a strong attack next turn. On the other hand, getting something huge like Deathwing or Faceless Behemoth can even put a stop to the game in the next turn or two. Special addition is Tyrantus which has a 9% chance overall of coming out and gives you a huge minion that is almost impossible to kill except with board removal Psychic Scream/Twisting Nether or of course, Vilespine Slayer.
Deathwing Dragonlord: 9%
Deathwing, DragonlordThere is almost a 10% chance that you can summon Deathwing, Dragonlord which means you’ll want to hold some big Dragons in hand in order to get the best of his ability. I’ve won games where a player has played Shadowreaper Anduin to kill my Deathwing, Dragonlord only to see two Drakonid Operatives with a Cobalt Scalebane, all pumped by Prince Keleseth come into play for free to beat him next turn.
Y’Shaarj: 9%
Y’shaarj, Rage UnboundThere is another 10% chance or so to get Y’shaarj, rage unbound who is a giant minion that can threaten your opponent while also pulling minions from your deck like Cobalt Scalebane or Corridor Creeper for even more damage output. Not much you can do to prepare for him but I would consider him a 9% chance of winning the game that turn.
Free from Amber RNG
Now let’s go over the odds and unique things you can pull from Free from Amber. The best thing about this card is that you Discover with it which means you have a much better chance of finding what you need. Not only do you have better odds of getting things like Taunt and Charge, you also have better odds of getting unique abilities like Mayor Noggenfogger which can completely change a game. Let’s look at the basic Taunt/Charge outs that you can consider and then we’ll take a look at some of the unique abilities.
No Abilities: 58%
Doomcaller, Eldritch Horror, Gruul, King Togwaggle, Marin the Fox, Medivh, the Guardian, The Boogeymonster, Tortollan Primalist, Violet Wurm, Alexstrasza, Blood of the Ancient One, Onyxia, Master Oakheart, C’thun, Deathwing, Faceless Behemoth, N’zoth, the corruptor, Sea Giant, Ultrasaur, Yogg-saron, Hope’s End with Special Addition: Malygos
These are all of the cards that are basically just big minions with battlecries or abilities that just make them bigger. One thing I wanted to add and note, Malygos, while it’s a great card that has many uses, in this deck that only has 2 spells Free from Amber and Mind Control unless you’re somehow creating spells you’re not going to be dealing any spell damage, so it’s basically just a minion with no ability. Just wanted to explain why I put it in this category.
Taunt: 47%
Obsidian Statue, Primordial Drake, The Lich King, Giant Mastodon, Ozruk, Sleepy Dragon, Soggoth the Slitherer
So I had to do some special math for this one. Each Discover attempt has a 20% chance of getting a Taunt but I wanted to find the odds of getting a Taunt out of the entire Discover and after looking at some stuff about odds and probability online, it came out to about 47%. This is important to know because one of the biggest benefits of Free from Amber is that you have such a high chance of pulling a Taunt to save yourself if you really need it. The Lich King is a great pull because of Taunt and the extra cards it will give you. Soggoth the Slitherer is great against decks where you’re worried about removal to ensure you have a Taunt to keep you alive. And Obsidian Statue is great when you’re also looking to gain life, since it and Ragnaros, lightlord are the only cards able of healing you.
Charge: 8%
Charged DevilsaurSadly there’s only one Charge minion from Free from Amber since you’re restricted to just Priest cards and Neutral cards, but since you get to Discover from 3 picks, it heightens the odds of getting the Charged Devilsaur you need to finish the game or kill a minion. At 8% that’s not bad when you’re really looking to finish the game since the Spiteful Priest deck is very aggressive and minion-heavy.
Unique Abilities: 8.5% each
Grand Archivist, Dragonhatcher, Mayor Noggenfogger, Nozdormu, Ysera, Deathwing, Dragonlord, Y’shaarj, rage unbound
These are your leftover minions that have powerful abilities which can help you change the tides of the game. I went over Grand Archivist, Deathwing, Dragonlord and Y’shaarj, rage unbound in the above sections but let’s take a look at the 9-mana minions that you can get only from Free from Amber.
Dragonhatcher: This isn’t as powerful in Spiteful Druid but in the Dragon Priest deck you can pull out some big minions just like Y’shaarj, rage unbound would. It’s small and easy to remove but even just the one pull can be a big change.
Mayor Noggenfogger: If you’re REALLY desperate, the Mayor can totally change a game based entirely on luck. I haven’t had any luck with him myself, but you never know the outcome, if you’re about to die and need to be saved from a Mage hero power this is probably your only answer.
Nozdormu: Not really an ability that “wins” games but can make it difficult for your opponent to play if they’ve been playing a control deck and can’t remove it quickly. The Spiteful Priest deck is simple to play, dropping heavy minions, so the short time limit shouldn’t really affect you like it would for someone who’s playing a control deck.
Ysera: Just great card advantage, her high health makes her hard to kill and the free cards will help you win games. Probably one of the best outcomes you can get from Free from Amber.
Conclusion: Know your outs
The main thing I want you to take from this article is that there are a lot of outs that this deck has. I’ve won a ton of games by relying on Free from Amber and knowing when to pull a nice Taunt minion or going for the Charged Devilsaur lethal. It’s also good to know that your Spiteful Summoner has outs like Ragnaros, Lightlord which literally pulled me from a game where I was at 1 health and kept me from death.
If you haven’t tried out the Spiteful Dragon Priest decklist yet I highly recommend it, I got to Rank 500 Legend on my first month playing with it and it surprises a lot of opponents with its versatility.
I’ll be back streaming on Twitch again soon at twitch.tv/whoisfuskee and you can always follow my status on Twitter at @whoisfuskee. I’ll be grinding monthly to see how many HCT points I can earn this year so come follow my progress and chill with me! I hope to see you guys drop by!
