With a D.Va bomb creating space on the payload, EnVyUs is able to keep KongDoo Uncia from capturing the second checkpoint on Dorado.
That hold brought EnVyUs up to 2-2 against KongDoo Uncia in the OGN Overwatch APEX losers bracket, putting the teams two one last map: King’s Row. EnVyUs, the OGN Overwatch APEX season one champions, struggled to adjust their hero pool to match the South Korean Overwatch scene’s versatility—but one last match put them to the test.
Despite EnVyUs’ continued success on payload pushing maps, the last international team in the tournament was not able to break through on King’s Row. KongDoo Uncia took the match 3-1, forcing EnVyUs out of the tournament.
What did EnVyUs do wrong? The team’s decision-making on King’s Row put their problems throughout OGN Overwatch APEX season on blast. Though EnVyUs is arguably made up of Overwatch’s most talented international players, their game is marked heavily by meta shifts. Tank heavy lineups fit EnVyUs’ hero pool, with the roster struggling in other scenarios. The current meta, which favors aggressive dive-style compositions, just doesn’t fit EnVyUs’ current style.
With Timo “Taimou” Kettunen on Hanzo and Jonathan “HarryHook” Tejedor Rua on Roadhog, EnVyUs made a risky switch in an attempt to capture the first point on King’s Row. And it almost worked: Taimou picked off enough KongDoo Uncia players and cleared enough space for EnVyUs to gain control of the point, just a sliver away from a capture.
It was just enough space to almost capture the point before KongDoo Uncia’s Kim “birdring” Ji Hyuk dropped a deadeye on McCree, pushing all of EnVyUs behind the taxi just off the point. One kill on Sebastian “chipshajen” Widlund was enough—and that’s where EnVyUs broke down.
EnVyUs swapped back to more familiar heroes, and though they were eventually able to capture the first point, mistakes were made under pressure. EnVyUs was on the right track at some point, but they needed to go further with regard to risk. Do something KongDoo Uncia wasn’t expecting. Instead, they turned back.
But the answer here isn’t in replacing any of EnVyUs’ current teammates: It’s using this time off to expand its hero pool and learn flexibility. It’s to come back as an EnVyUs who can do more than just tank compositions.
KongDoo Uncia will next see Lunatic-Hai on March 10 in the lower bracket’s final round to determine which team moves on to the finals playoff. RunAway, who defeated Lunatic-Hai this morning in an incredible upset, will be joining the lower bracket winners in the playoffs. Group B begins March 14.
