The Halo series will regain a key feature that was included since the series’ birth: split-screen cooperative gameplay, according to Bonnie Ross, the head of 343 Industries, who made this announcement at the Las Vegas DICE Summit.
A highly-regarded part of Halo since Combat Evolved, the feature was removed in Halo 5, a decision that then-creative director Josh Holmes called “one of the most difficult ones we’ve ever had to make as a studio.”
At DICE, Ross said the following about the community feedback on the removal of this feature, as well as other studio mishaps:
“We’ve also had a lot of learnings along the way,” Ross said. “You know when we fell down with the multiplayer launch of [Halo: The Master Chief Collection], or when we didn’t put split screen in with Halo 5. I think it’s incredibly painful for the community and for us. It erodes trust with the community, as the community is part of our world building. [We’ve had a] lot of learnings from that, and I would say for any FPS going out forward we will always have split screen going forward…”
Perhaps this feature will help bring Halo back to its old gameplay style, and in turn, make fans of the older games a lot happier with the newer ones.
