A new update was pushed this afternoon onto Overwatch‘s PTR (public test realm server), with numerous changes. Of most important note, however, is a couple of changes to the custom games mode that will translate to spectating in esports.
- Static cameras are now supported in spectator mode.
- Team names can now be edited in custom games.
- Custom Games can now be paused.
These improvements may seem minor at first, but could go a long way to improving the spectator experience. It’s a start. Fans of Overwatch have known for a while now that the spectator experience is lacking, and the team has said they were working on ways to better that experience, and this looks to be the first step in that direction.
The update comes to the PTR just days before ELEAGUE‘s Overwatch Open tournament, which will culminate in a nationally televised Grand Finals. Now is the time for Overwatch to shine, and it looks like these new tools could help make the experience better for longtime viewers and newcomers alike.
