Gambit take home DreamHack Open Austin

Gambit have secured their second Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament victory in six months.

Facing Immortals in the grand finals, the predominantly Kazakh roster of Gambit won the confrontation in two straight maps against the Brazilian squad. While both maps of the series ended up being close, Immortals were unable to stop Gambit in either of the games, as Mihail “Dosia” Stolyarov delivered an MVP-level performance in the grand finals.

But despite the very even grand finals, Gambit’s biggest challenge at the event came in the semifinals, as the team was matched up against French superteam G2 Esports. Consisting of legendary names such as Kenny “kennyS” Schrub and Richard “shox” Papillon, G2 were considered to be the favorites to win the entire event.

Across three games, however, Gambit were able to advance past the Frenchmen—who were only able to score a single map victory after a triple overtime situation on Nuke. The following two maps were almost equally as close, but ultimately the French team were unable to close the games out—with Gambit heading to their second DreamHack Open grand final in six months.

For Immortals, the outcome of the grand finals must be disappointing, considering the fact that the roster’s most recent LAN performances have been incredibly inconsistent. At IEM Katowice on March 4, the players were able to reach a top four finish. They were also subsequently eliminated in 9-11th place at the StarSeries Season 3 LAN finals on April 7.

Gambit, however, heads home with $50,000, as the squad continues their rapid rise to the top of CS:GO.
