Shroud says Apex Legends would “fly” with custom matches

“It’ll be so fun to play that game with a full 20-squad with good rulesets."

Star Twitch streamer Michael “shroud” Grzesiek is eager to see custom matches in Apex Legends.

With this feature, shroud and other streamers and professional players would be able to create custom lobbies and promote tournaments and friendly competitions with private matches. It’s currently impossible to choose which players get into the same match as you in Apex, and all matches are public by default.

“I truly believe when there’s custom games in Apex, it’s going to fucking fly,” shroud said. “It’ll be so fun to play that game with a full 20-squad with good rulesets. If you make the rulesets about kills instead of wins, like it should be in Apex, it’s going to be fun. I can’t wait.”

The most that players can do to compete with each other in Apex today is try to enter the queue at the same time. For tournaments, the most-used format is the point system in public matches, in which two squads indirectly face each other in three games. They can score by getting eliminations and winning the match, and the team with the most points after three public matches wins the series and advances in the tournament. This is the format BOOM TV’s Code Red tournament and Twitch Rivals use.

Other battle royale titles already feature a custom matchmaking system. In Fortnite, players can create a custom matchmaking key that other players can use in their lobbies to enter in a private match. They can create matches in any of the game’s modes that are available at that time, including the competitive Arena mode. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds also has a custom matchmaking system that’s used in official tournaments.

Respawn and EA have yet to announce when custom matchmaking is coming to Apex Legends. With season two information set to be revealed at E3 in June, players might have news about it soon.
