Fortnite‘s creator Epic Games has begun taking legal action against organizers of the recent Norwich Fortnite Live festival, which has been mockingly dubbed “the Fortnite Fyre Festival.”
The festival had been spreading around social media over the weekend for basically being a massive waste of time and of money. Not only were attractions horrid and mismanaged, such as there being a lone small climbing wall for over 3,000 kids, there was hardly anything to do which led to many refunds being issued on the day.
The event brought comparisons to Fyre Festival, the infamous, disastrous 2017 music festival that was recently the subject of a popular documentary on Netflix.
The festival was not licensed by Epic Games and seemingly everything about it, including the Facebook page, disappeared after it ended. Its organizers, a company called Exciting Events, used licensed Fortnite materials to promote it without approval from Epic.
In a statement sent to Eurogamer, Epic said that it would be taking legal action against the organizers. Epic was “not in any way associated with the event that took place in Norwich,” the company said. Epic has issued the claim against Exciting Events to the High Court in London.
Exciting Events recently announced it planned to bring the event back next year to the same location. But that’s certainly not looking likely at this point.
