After a very long wait since Marathon’s announcement in 2023, Bungie has finally revealed the gameplay as well as the release date of the upcoming PvP first-person shooter. The game is a multiplayer extraction shooter title, featuring a futuristic environment set on the fictional planet of Tau Ceti IV in the year 2893.
Every match in the game features six teams of three players, with the goal of gathering as much loot and resources as possible and successfully extracting your team without getting eliminated by other teams or the lethal environment itself. You can also choose to play solo or as a duo if you want, but that will put you at a disadvantage against other teams that have all three slots filled.
Here’s the countdown for the full release of Marathon.
Marathon release date

Bungie has confirmed that Marathon will release on Sept. 23, 2025. The developer confirmed this recently with the release of Marathon’s first gameplay overview trailer.
Additionally, the game will also feature cross-platform play and cross-save functionality across all platforms from release. It has also been confirmed that the closed alpha testing of the game will begin from April 23, 2025, giving the developers ample amount of time to fix bugs and glitches before release.
Here’s the countdown until the full release of the game:
You will have access to the game only after its release, and Bungie hasn’t made any comments yet about the possibility of early access.
Marathon release platforms
Bungie has confirmed that Marathon will be releasing across Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 23, 2025. However, the game won’t be available through the Xbox Game Pass as neither PlayStation nor Microsoft has made any comments about it.
According to the game’s director, Joe Ziegler, this game is not intended to be the successor of the ongoing Destiny 2 storyline, which features a more PvE system compared to Marathon’s PvP environment.
Marathon will feature customization options, giving you the option to choose between different character builds, weapons, gears, and abilities. The game will not only rely heavily on tactics and coordination between every team, but also on picking your team compositions and strategizing to ensure success.
