Obsidian devs confirm Avowed won’t have a 60 FPS option on console

Do you need those extra frames?

It has become normal in modern gaming to give players multiple options for controlling a game’s performance, including raising or lowering frame rate in order to get smoother gameplay at the cost of some downgraded visuals. However, not all new games feature this option.

That includes upcoming action RPG Avowed from Obsidian Entertainment. Several of the developers spoke to the Iron Lords Podcast about the game in great detail and what players can expect. When asked about the game’s console performance, the developers confirmed they are targeting 30 FPS at the bare minimum. The reason for this is because they wanted to focus more on visuals, stating that “you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames” when playing a single-player action game.

Hearing that the game won’t have a 60 FPS option isn’t unexpected for a console like the Xbox Series S, considering the specs are inferior compared to its sister console. But for a console as powerful as the Series X, this announcement can be a bit surprising. And while it is true that it is not a requirement for a game to be played at 60 FPS, a lot of gamers do feel strongly about having the smoothest looking visuals as possible.

While the locked framerate is disappointing for console players, this doesn’t mean that it might never happen. Other Xbox games like Starfield and Redfall didn’t launch with a 60 FPS option on consoles, but it eventually came in future updates. If the demand is there, perhaps the developers at Obsidian will reconsider their 30 FPS vow. The game isn’t due for release until 2025, so there is still plenty of time.
