Apex takes a popular page out of Warzone’s book with newest game mode

Fortnite did it just recently, too.

Battle royale games have a long history of taking inspiration from one another, and another chapter in that story is coming in Apex Legends’ new season next week.

Apex‘s season 22, Shockwave, adds a new trios mode called Revival. It’s heavily inspired by Call of Duty: Warzone‘s Resurgence mode, which recently heavily inspired Fortnite‘s new Reload mode. If you’ve played either of those, you have a good idea of what to expect from Revival.

“Stay in the game longer with Revival: a new twist on respawning without banners or respawn beacons,” Respawn said in its announcement. “As long as one squadmate still stands, you’ll automatically respawn based on a timer until the fourth ring. But it’s never that easy. Your respawn timer will increase with each death and each round; and if you and another are both down, you’ll respawn together with the earliest timer. Any living squadmate can speed up the timer by taking aggressive action like doing damage, downing enemies, and eliminating them.”

If the description sounds familiar, it should. Warzone’s Resurgence mode introduced a respawn-enabled wrinkle on the battle royale formula, and it’s become quite popular ever since, with its own rulesets, maps, ranked mode, and subset of fans from normal BR.

This type of mode takes out the monotony of dying and watching teammates in a BR mode and adds the thrill of surviving countdowns to keep teammates in the game by playing aggressively or camping it out. Many gamers likely hope it’ll be similarly popular for Apex as it has been for other games.

Apex Legends: Shockwave begins next week on Aug. 6, and Revival trios will go live on the same day. The new season also includes the addition of akimbo/dual wield weapons, a new map called E-District, class perks and Battle Sense, and more.
