From humble beginnings.

From a basic intro character, to showing off a console’s VR capabilities, to becoming a full-fledged franchise mascot, Astro Bot is winning over the hearts of PlayStation users everywhere. Some people, however, might not realize this isn’t the first time this cute robot has graced their screens.

There have been multiple games featuring Astro, along with a handful of Astro Bot games from Team Asobi. This latest title is, however, the biggest release from the developers so far, and has been well-received by critics around the world. With references to big-name PlayStation games such as God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Uncharted, the gameplay speaks for itself while also nodding to the classics.

The Playroom VR

  • Release date: Nov. 15, 2013
  • Developer: Team Asobi
  • Genre: Casual mini-games

The Playroom is a small demo game that came pre-loaded on all PlayStation 4 consoles, and was meant to show how the PlayStation camera would work alongside the PlayStation DualShock 4 controller. There were a few different games you could try to test out the augmented reality capabilities of the console, including a virtual pet, AT Bots, and AR Hockey.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission

  • Genre: Platformer/VR

As one of the first true iterations of the Astro Bot universe, Astro Bot Rescue Mission re-introduced the characters from the Playroom VR in a grand adventure where they attempt to rescue Astro’s crew after they’ve been scattered across different universes. It is also a 3D-platformer game that received “universal acclaim” from critics, and even won the best VR game of the year at the Game Awards.

  • Genre: Platformer

Meant as a sequel to Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Astro’s Playroom is another iteration of the 3D platform title that was meant to showcase the capabilities of PlayStation’s DualSense controller, as well as a quick history lesson about the company and the console. It was a fun little demo for those who just bought at PlayStation 5, and set the stage for the grandest addition to the franchise.

Heralded as a symphony for the platforming genre, Astro Bot has released to widespread acclaim from multiple different critics and outlets. With deep level designs, exciting gameplay, and lovable characters, this game has become one of the better ones in the genre. It might not be too long of a story or revolutionize the platforming space, but it is still a worthwhile adventure on which to embark.
