While Call of Duty fans wait for Black Ops 6 and its beta later this month, many are returning to a recent remake thanks to a mod that has catapulted a 2017 title to the top sellers list on Steam.
A rebirth of the original Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer has actually been built inside of the 2017 release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, with a PC mod called H2M. But it’s a whole lot more than just a fresh coat of paint.
The CoD 4 remaster in 2017 included a multiplayer component, while the MW2 remaster from 2020 only featured the 2009 campaign. This mod aims to fix that, and it’s apparently doing its job, because the 2017 remaster has jumped as high as second on Steam’s top-seller list, even above BO6.
H2M tacks on all of the MW2 maps, weapons, perks, and more, along with its own progression system including camos and Prestige leveling, to create a truly in-depth CoD experience. There are even some MW2 campaign levels repurposed into new, custom maps.
While the mod has increased the attention on CoD 4’s remaster and the game is selling well right now, it’s possible that the joy may be short-lived. Activision could send a cease and desist to the mod’s makers to shut it down quite easily.
The CoD 4 remaster is currently on sale, as luck would have it. It’s marked down 50 percent and costs just $19.99 for the time being, and many are hopping on the lower price to take advantage and try out the new mod.
The hype may die down when the BO6 beta launches later this month on Aug. 30 (or if the mod is unceremoniously shut down). But, for now, the nostalgia is hitting hard for PC gamers.
