With the release of the Fallout Amazon TV series more gamers than ever are flocking to the wasteland via the games too. One of the biggest draws includes the long-anticipated next-gen update for Fallout 4, which is finally here and brings plenty of improvements to the Bethesda juggernaut.
Originally released in 2015, Fallout 4 is still the latest main entry in the franchise more than eight years later. Now, new and veteran players alike can dive back into post-apocalyptic Boston with a fresh set of updates that improve the game for next-gen consoles. The wait for these enhancements was long—and it will be even longer until we finally get Fallout 5—but now you can enjoy the Fallout 4 next-gen update and other goodies too.
Fallout 4 next-gen update release time and date
The Fallout 4 next-gen update is now available to download on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as of 12pm CT on April 25, alongside its patch. To get access to this update you need to own Fallout 4 for that device, unless you have Xbox Game Pass.
If you already own Fallout 4 on PlayStation or Xbox, you can download the next-gen update for free. Game Pass subscribers can also access the new update by downloading Fallout 4 on a platform that supports it; however, PlayStation Plus users have been reporting issues with getting the update to work—though Bethesda confirmed it will be available via PlayStation Plus Extra.
The next-gen upgrades for Fallout 4 also include free Creation Club items in a new quest, Echoes of the Past, and previously released Creation Club content, including the Makeshift Weapon Pack, Halloween Workshop, and more. If you need more Fallout content, Fallout 76 is available for free via Prime Gaming along with Fallout 3 and New Vegas being available for free on Amazon Luna for the next six months.
What’s new for PC players?
Though the main appeal of the update is for Fallout 4 players on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, PC gamers received new features in the next-gen update on April 25. This includes widescreen and ultra-widescreen support, fixes to the Creation Kit, and a “variety of quest updates.”
On top of that, Fallout 4 players on Steam, the Microsoft Store, and GOG have received stability, mod, and bug fixes, so there’s plenty of appeal to the Fallout 4 next-gen update no matter what platform you’re on.
