R6 April Fools’ Day event is live

Siege gets a very real April Fools' Day event.

Ubisoft has dropped a new April Fools’ Day event for Rainbow Six Siege. While the timing of the event’s launch seems suspicious, it appears to be very real and live. The event, Rainbow is Magic, will be live from April 1 to 8, leaving players with plenty of time to check out the whimsy of Ubisoft’s creation.

Rainbow is Magic includes a “rescue the VIP teddy bear” mode where players will operate on the brightly-overhauled Plane map. But the Plane map is now toy-sized, further adding to the whimsy. Certain operators will get their own seasonal skins. Blackbeard, Smoke, Montagne, and Tachanka have been given “plushie” outfits, which may not be the most tactical choice outside of the event—but who wouldn’t want to see a Tachanka running around Hereford dressed as a unicorn? The cosmetic list grows with Ash, Thermite, Thatcher, Sledge, Castle, Kapkan, Bandit, Frost, and Recruit all receiving “toy soldier” skins, which is the type of on-the-nose humor we’d expect from an April Fools’ event.

Don’t worry, you can take these cosmetic items with you into the field after the event. Ubisoft has also given players the option of purchasing Magic Collection Packs, which function like the usual Alpha Packs, but have no duplicate items. Magic Collection Packs are available for purchase for 300 R6 Credits, or players can earn them by completing challenges. There are 17 items in total to collect, and Ubisoft has jumpstarted everyone’s collection with a free Magic Collection Pack.

Not only has Ubisoft come through on its promise to support mid-season events, but the developer has shown that it isn’t afraid to take the game out of its confined tactical space for a little while. Siege only has a couple game modes that can be easy to get burnt out on, so it’s a nice change of pace to see the devs do something new to diversify the experience. We’ve seen this kind of shake up before with Operation Outbreak, but Rainbow is Magic is a step away from the self-serious tone of Siege. The event is a welcome shift in tone, and one we can’t wait to get our hands on.

The event is live, so go spread some magic now.
