Black Myth: Wukong may just be the game of the summer of 2024 for a variety of reasons, the foremost of which is how successful it has become in its first week.
Game Science announced today that the single-player action RPG has sold 10 million units on PlayStation 5 and PC in just four days, with a staggering high of three million concurrent players across all platforms.
According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, this has made Wukong “one of the fastest selling games of all time, surpassing Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy in the same timeframe.”
The news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, however, as Wukong also surpassed Palworld to reach the second-highest concurrent player count on Steam of all time within mere hours of its launch. Now, just PUBG stands ahead of Wukong when it comes to that particular statistic.
It’s also been a hit on Twitch, with top streamers bringing in hundreds of thousands of viewers and getting even more eyes on the game with each passing hour. Streamers like MOONMOON, Lirik, CohhCarnage, and Soulslike streamers alike have all been pouring into the game and enjoying its action gameplay.
Wukong has made waves for both its odd rules about not mentioning COVID-19 or “feminist propaganda” and criticism for its lack of diversity, but the game has been reviewed quite well. The game boasts an 81 on MetaCritic and also earned a score of 8/10 in its Dot Esports review.
In the end, though, the game’s popularity seems to be well-earned as a gorgeous title with fun gameplay in the summer period that’s usually without many big game releases. Baldur’s Gate 3 blew up last summer within a similar time frame as gamers normally wait for the fall and winter for each year’s large titles.
