Best Spells in Black Myth Wukong, ranked

These are the best abilities you can use on your journey to the west.

Black Myth: Wukong is one of the best games this year and, in true soulslike fashion, offers players with a multitude of spells to choose from. Not all of these are that great, so here is our ranking of the best spells in Black: Myth Wukong.

Best Black Myth Wukong spells

When choosing the absolute best spells, I asked a single question: how often does it give me benefits? This led me to single out four spells—five if we count the second transformation. This doesn’t mean that the rest are useless and don’t have their application, but rather that they didn’t meet the criteria of being useful more often than not. With that cleared, here is our ranking.

5. Transformation Red Tides

Few Transformation forms made the cut simply because they must be exceptionally powerful to be counted as useful in most fights. Your Transformation isn’t the “make it or break it” sort of spell, but rather a life-saving tactical option for when your own health bar starts to falter severely.

The Red Tides transformation is obtained in the very first chapter of the game and remains useful up to the very end. If you like it, there is no need to ever switch over due to its high speed, damage, and Burn that can chunk even the healthiest bosses quite a lot.

In addition, its heavy attack dash is perfect for larger groups of powerful enemies, and you’ve got yourself a mighty useful trick.

4. Cloud Step

Cloud Step is the perfect mobility tool in Black Myth: Wukong. When upgraded, its low cooldown allows you to frequently employ its heightened critical strike chance and movement speed alongside the exceptionally powerful attack that can stagger most enemies. Personally, I used it mainly to create a window of opportunity to cast another spell that will appear on this list or to heal in tight situations where a boss is on their relentless attack chain.

Cloud Step is equally useful as an offensive and defensive (or retreating) spell that lets you take a breather, cast something else, or execute a strong strike to deal tons of damage.

3. Transformation Ebon Flow

I know that putting two Transformation options on this list might seem crazy, but hear me out. Both are equally above the spells that didn’t make the cut, and while Red Tides has its own advantages, Ebon Flow takes the concept of transforming even further. It can be obtained from the Ruyi Scroll area unlocked during Chapter 3 and grants you an immensely powerful form that does a ton of damage, has a lot of HP and defense, and is generally a good choice.

It can even stagger enemies with its light and heavy attacks alike, and its attack combos can dish out some serious damage even against high-defense bosses. The only downside here is its lack of overall mobility, which is made up for by its obscene health bar that only grows with further upgrades to the Transformation skill tree.

2. Pluck of Many

The Pluck of Many might strike you as nearly useless in the early stages of the game when you first unlock it, but it significantly grows as you do through upgrades and armor and weapon crafting. It spawns numerous clones of Wukong all over the place, all of which immediately rush to hammer whatever enemy crosses their path. When buffed with upgrades, their longevity extends significantly, allowing you to dish out massive damage and even stunlock many enemies and bosses.

I honestly believe it to be a fundamental spell that should always be employed for maximum effect, alongside the number one spot that we’ll take a look at next. Keep in mind that Pluck of Many can also be cast while you are within Cloud Step‘s invisibility without breaking it, so the two spells synergize quite well.

1. Immobilize

Whether it’s freezing your opponent so you and your clones can go wild on them, stopping them mid-attack to heal, or even casting another spell, Immobilize can do it all. It is the first spell you unlock in the game, and I’ve personally stayed with it until the very end.

While sometimes enemies can easily break its effect or annull it altogether, Immobilize is such a fundamental tool for combat in Black Myth: Wukong that I don’t see Ring of Fire or Spell Binder ever replacing it. It works exceptionally well with both Cloud Step and Pluck of Many and lets you unlock the full potential of those two spells, making your journey to the West much easier.
